1.1 DEFINITION OF NETWORK AND ITS TYPES:

  • What is Network?

Network: A network is a collection of computer which are connected through wire/wireless to exchange data, information among themselves. OR

When we connect more than one computer by wire/wireless for exchanging information among themselves, then we can say that there is a network on them.

  • Types of Network

Depending the capacity a Network is broadly classified into 3 (three) Categories which are namely

  1. LAN (Local Area Network)
  2. MAN ( Metropolitan Area Network ) and
  3. WAN (Wide Area Network)
Types of Network

1. LAN (Local Area Network) :The network which is spread with a small geographical like home, office, building, campus is called Local Area Network (LAN). Local Area Network (LAN) Provides a useful way to  of sharing the resources between the end user

2. MAN( Metropolitan Area Network) : The Network is spread within a city is called Metropolitan Area Network (MAN).Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) Provides uplinks for LAN to WAN or we can say Internet Eg. Cable Network

3. WAN(Wide Area Network): The Network which is spread across the country is called Wide Area Network (WAN).This network provides connectivity to LAN and MAN. Eg. Network of Roads, Network of Telecommunication

  • Others Types of Network:
(1) PAN (Personal Area Network) : The network which is spread with 10 mtr. of distance is called Personal Area Network(PAN). This Network is very smallest network and very personal to use. This network is connected though Bluetooth and Infra-red enabled devices like, Mobile Phone, Wireless Keyboard Mouse, Wireless Printer, TV Remote etc.

 History of Internet:

The seed of internet was planted in 1969 when US Department of Defense sponsored a project name ARPANET (ADVANCE RESEARCH PROJECTS ADMINISTRATION NETWORK). The goal of this project was to connect computer at different universities and U.S defense As soon as the engineers students ,scientists and researchers  who were the part of this system., began exchanging data and message on it.

In the mid of 80’s another federal agency i.e. National  Science Foundation (NSF)created a new high capacity network NSFnet which was more capable than ARPANET. After that so many private company built their own  Netwok but was not much popular. And last in the combination of this two(i.e ARPANET and NSFnet) it was named  INTERNET. After that the commercial internet service come into the picture which are still running INTERNET
